Buying An Interstate Vehicle

Steps to a successful interstate private sale vehicle purchase:

  1. After agreement with the seller to buy the vehicle, offer to pay a deposit to secure the vehicle. This may be subject to a few conditions like a local friend (if applicable) viewing or driving the vehicle, obtaining finance approval and/or a satisfactory independent mechanical inspection.

  2. You’re swapping bank and personal details so we recommend swapping licence details prior to payment of a deposit for assurance it’s a genuine transaction, and request a copy of the current registration certificate. This ensures you are paying the rightful owner. There are lots of online scams from both sellers and buyers these days so it’s wise to do your due diligence.

  3. Use the registration number and VIN from the registration certificate to conduct a PPSR check online to ensure the vehicle is not under finance, stolen or a repaired write off. It's amazing what sellers don't tell you!

  4. If the seller is uncomfortable with any of the above reasonable requests then consider walking away. Once all bona fide and you are both happy to proceed, pay the deposit or payment in full.  It’s always beneficial to have agreed details in writing via email, text, Messenger, WhatsApp conversation etc. (at Automates we use a single page written agreement signed by both parties).

  5. Before final payment, consider obtaining an independent mechanical inspection of the vehicle to ensure it is sound. Any agreement for a private purchase should always have a condition to refund the deposit if the report is not satisfactory to you. Dealerships selling used vehicles will usually warrant the vehicle, but you may still wish to obtain an inspection for added peace of mind.

  6. Once final payment is made, arrange interstate freight eg. Prixcar - they can deliver door to door with a cheaper depot to depot option if you and the seller are flexible.

  7. If the vehicle has remaining interstate registration the seller will complete a disposal advice with their motor registry on date of full payment prior to vehicle pick up

  8. It’s now your car. Arrange insurance for the vehicle before it leaves the seller’s possession.

  9. If the vehicle has no remaining valid interstate  registration, purchase a limited day registration permit from Service NSW that allows you to temporarily drive the vehicle in NSW, to be displayed on the windscreen.

  10. Obtain a blue slip from a local mechanic as the first step to registering a vehicle in NSW. Attend to any required repairs.

  11. Pay the CTP component. eg. GIO, Allianz

  12. Visit Service NSW with proof of purchase (copy of completed disposal form), blue slip, CTP receipt and old plates (if applicable) in hand to pay for 12 months NSW registration
